What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing.
Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese educator, rediscovered the root system in mid 1800. He studied ancient sutras and discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system which activate the universal life energy for healing. He began to use these sounds and symbols to heal and called this form of healing, ‘Reiki’.
Reiki was introduced to the world in the mid 70’s and since then its use has been spread to the world dramatically. Reiki is administered by ‘laying on hands’.
It involves the transfer of energy through the healer to the patient to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal itself by balancing the energy. It is a holistic, energy healing system that touches all levels mind, body and spirit. This life force energy has been described in many traditions as Chi, qi, mana, prana and spirit. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means ‘God’s Wisdom’ or ‘The Higher Power’ and Ki which means ‘Life Force Energy’. So Reiki is actually Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy.
It is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self improvement that everyone can learn and use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and ailment/disorder and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote healing.
